East Lothian grandad left on floor of Bangkok hotel for eight days - sipping from a pipe to survive

Bill Fairbairn, left his Dunbar home on 16 January looking forward to travelling Thailand alone.

However his family became extremely worried for his well being when he went missing a month in to his trip.

Little did they know that Bill had suffered a severe stroke and had been left stranded on the hotel floor with staff oblivious to his condition.

The Daily Record reported how Bill kept himself alive by pulling a water pipe out of the wall and sipping on it for eight days.

His family have now created a Go Fund Me Page, as they face a fee of £30,000 to get him back to East Lothian.

Bills daughter, Fiona Gunn, took to social media to desperately try and locate her father. She posted his picture on a number of local Thailand pages.

She told The Daily Record: "He usually texts my auntie and his sister everyday, but we knew there was something up when he suddenly stopped texting them on February 22”

“We sent him loads of emails and WhatsApp messages but nothing was going through or being delivered.

“You try not to think the worst with these thing, but we definitely knew there was something wrong."

Through her post, the mother of one, was eventually able to track down the manager of the apartment her father was staying at.

Bill Fairbairn, was then rushed to a local hospital after the hotel manager smashed down the door to find him.

However the horrendous family ordeal was just beginning. The Bangkok ambulance service demanded that £500 be paid before they would even consider taking him.

Even more shockingly, Bill had not realised his travel insurance had expired and now the family have been left with the prospect of paying £30,000 to get him home.

Fiona has taken to social media again to plead for financial assistance to get her father back to Dunbar.

She has shared a crowd funder for her father writing: "Firstly I want to apologise that I have to do this as I see these pages as begging for money... but sadly that’s the point I’m at now as I am literally BEGGING for help.

"In Thailand there is no NHS. The ambulance would not take him before £500 was paid. Then in the hospital they charge anything from £1,000-£5,000 PER DAY.

"This means we need to fly him home at a cost of £29,000 (yes I’m shocked at the cost too(!) as two nurses need to escort him)"

If you want to donate to get Bill home, you can donate to the GoFundMe page.
