12th century East Lothian castle raided by ruthless thieves as historic stones stolen

Ruthless thieves have stolen a substantial amount of stones from a historic East Lothian castle.

Police Scotland are probing the theft of a large number of stones from Yester Castle.

Shocking images show a gaping hole in the wall of the ruins were stones have been taken.

Police Scotland said: “A report has been received regarding a substantial theft of stone from Yester Castle, Gifford.

“We are appealing to members of the public to come forward with any information regarding the theft.”

Yester Castle was originally built by Hugo de Giffard during the late twelfth century.

Once a major fortification that dominated East Lothian, the building is now a rarely visited ruin buried deep within woodland.
