East Lothian beaches 'busier than on a Bank Holiday' as COVID-19 advice ignored

On Friday this week Scotland's First Minister said that the self-isolation advice issued on COVID-19 should not be considered optional and that it must be followed to ensure the protection of loved ones.

Today, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson emphasised that the best gift you could give your mum this Mother's Day is to stay away in self-isolation.

However, beaches in East Lothian today have been described as being busier than they are 'on a Bank Holiday' as groups of families and friends flock to the popular coastal hotspots.

On a post on Facebook group East Lothian Ladies one member wrote about North Berwick: "It was busier than a normal high summer day with a constant flow of traffic and our very narrow high street packed with visitors.

"I saw kids playing in groups, people popping in and out of shops, queuing cheek by jowl in the ice cream shop and buying picnics in our supermarkets.

"It was nearly impossible to observe social distancing and I had to move my kids from a very secluded spot in the dunes as a multi generational family came to sit next to us (with grandparents) to have a picnic (complete with champagne)."

"This is not a holiday. I appreciate how tempting it is to come and exercise your kids at the beach on a sunny day but I am now considering confining mine to our garden."

In a news group for Gullane one user wrote: "How many of us noticed the amount of traffic passing through Gullane today as if it was a summer afternoon?

"The beach car park was full and has been busy for the past couple of days. What part of 'stay at home' do these people not understand?"

In pictures shared of the popular beach's carpark people can be seen playing football - complete with an icecream van on hand.

SNP Councillor for Musselburgh Stuart Currie wrote on Twitter: "I have written to the East Lothian Chief Executive asking that the coastal car parks are closed.

"We cannot go on allowing mass gatherings like this in the midst of the current public health emergency."

The news comes as the public have been asked not to head to remote locations in Scotland to see out the pandemic.
