East Lothian beach-goers warned as giant sinkhole appears in road

Visitors to a popular East Lothian coastal town have been warned to drive safely after a giant sinkhole appeared in a beach-side road.

Dunbar Community Council took to Facebook to share a picture of the huge hole next to Dunbar's East Beach, explaining that it had been caused by recent heavy seas.

The strong tides have breached an area of the sea wall defences of Lamer Street, which alongs Dunbar's Beach Front and East Beach.

The group posted : "Recent heavy seas have caused a further undercutting and breach of the sea wall defences at Lamer Street. This time a sink hole has appeared near Coastguard Cottages. AG Thompson have been on site to do emergency repairs - pumping cement into the void.

"Members of Dunbar Shore and Harbour Group/East Beach regeneration Group/Dunbar Community Council will be meeting with ELC Officers to discuss a longer term masterplan and actions to improve the sea wall defences in the area."

One Dunbar local commented on the post: "Crikey! That’s becoming an annual occurrence. It would seem it’s dangerous and needs proper full scale remedial works."

Edinburgh Live have contacted East Lothian Council for comment.
