East Lancs Road partly closed after icy weather conditions cause crashes

UPDATE: The road has now reopened.

Part of the East Lancs Road has been closed this morning due to icy weather conditions.

Drivers have been warned to avoid the stretch of road between Haydock Island and Golborne Island if they are travelling towards west towards Manchester.

The road was shut from around 10am after emergency services were called to deal with crashes caused by the ice.

One crashwhich happened at around 9am involved a van which flipped onto its side after a collision with a hatchback car

A spokesman for Transport for Greater Manchester advised drivers to plan extra time for their journeys.

They said: "The East Lancs A580 has been closed from Haydock Island to Golborne Island inbound towards Manchester.

"This is due to icy conditions causing incidents in the area.

"Allow extra time for your journey."

The road will reopen once it can be made safe.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for snow and ice across Greater Manchester for today and tomorrow.

Forecaster say temperatures are unlikely to rise above 2°C for the rest of the day but will feel colder because of a chilly wind coming from the north.
