The East Lancashire Road is closed in both directions due to a crash involving three cars.
The crash happened at the junction with Higher Green Lane near Astley shortly before 5pm.
Police say there will be traffic delays while the emergency services attend the incident.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called shortly before 5pm to a report of a three-car collision at the junction of Higher Green Lane and the East Lancashire Road.
"The vehicles involved are a Vauxhall Corsa, BMW 325 and Toyota Yaris.
"Emergency services are at the scene.
"Road closures are in place."
