East Kilbride youngsters having a ball as restrictions ease and matches return

Youngsters across the country were celebrating last week when Scottish Government restrictions lifted, allowing them to play matches with their friends for the first time this year.

And players at East Kilbride FC’s 2010 and 2012 teams were all smiles when they checked in at K-Park to prepare for their first league matches of the season this weekend.

The Kilby kids kick-off their Glasgow League season on Saturday and 2010’s coach Scott Simpson admits there is huge excitement among the squad as some form of normality returns.

He said: “The Glasgow League games start this weekend.

"It’s non-competitive but for the kids it is highly competitive for them.

“They’ve been back training since February, but matches are allowed now so we played EK Rolls-Royce and Burgh last week and we’ve got other games lined up.

“The boys are excited to get back to it and we are hoping to get them back to a good level of fitness as well.

“Kids at this age need to get out the house instead of playing X-Boxes and things like that.”

In another boost, mums and dads will be able to cheer their children on for the first time since the pandemic took hold at certain facilities as restrictions ease.

Scott added: “This is great news because parent haven’t seen their kids play for over a year.

“K-Park isn’t ready for that yet, but some council facilities will be so that will be good for everyone.”

Training for the team is held on Tuesdays 6-7pm and Thursdays 6-8, with games on Saturdays and Sundays.

All training and match kit is provided by the club. Anybody looking to join the club can contact Scott Simpson on 07743076840.
