Graeme Robertson is delighted by East Kilbride YM’s scintillating start to the Caledonian League season.
YM thrashed Cambria 9-1 on Saturday to remain at the top of the table after scoring 18 goals in their opening three games.
The Kirktonholme side now host Giffnock North on Saturday and EKYM boss Robertson expects a tough encounters.
He said: “It’s been an incredible start to the season. Eighteen goals scored and only four against is good in anyone’s book.
“We got an early lead on Saturday which allowed us to give everybody a run out. That’s important because we want to give players game time.
“Pre-season was decent because we won the centenary tournament which set us up nicely for the league starting.
“It’s still really early days but we want to continue this form. We know we are unlikely to continue scoring so many goals but we want to maintain the level of performances.
"It’s difficult to read too much into our start because of Covid and I think teams will settle down later on in the season.
“They’ll be tougher games ahead but we know that and will prepare properly.
"Giffnock North will be challenging at the top this season. Dumbarton, Thorn and Eaglesham have all started the season well and it’s going to be a competitive league.
“It’s always tough and anybody could win it but it’s always nice to get the points on the board early doors - like we’ve managed."
Last midweek a convincing second half performance against Wishaw Wycombe Wanderers saw YM win 7-2.
Doubles from Ross McDonagh and Craig Tocher, as well as strikes from James Cameron, Liam Barclay and a goal of the season contender from Craig Fry gave YM maximum points.
On Saturday, Jordan Fletcher set YM on their way before doubles from Tocher, Ross Bryden and one from James Cameron had YM out of sight by the interval.
Ross Bryden completed his hat-trick after the break with youngsters Max Foster and John McNaught getting on the score sheet.
Robertson added: “I’m really happy with our squad. We’ve managed to sign two or three new players who will make a huge difference to the team.
“We are confident in our chances because the squad has improved dramatically over the summer.”
• Meanwhile, YM’s GGPL side also recorded a fine victory in their League Cup section, defeating John Street AFC 5-0. Kyle Rankin netted a hat-trick with Stuart Gordon and Ryan McLean completing the scoring.
