East Kilbride YM enjoyed a memorable week as they received surprise recognition for their 100th anniversary by the Caledonian League and their Greater Glasgow Premier League side ran out big winners at the weekend.
On February 10, YM chief Graeme Robertson picked up a trophy in recognition of the club’s fantastic achievement in reaching the 100-year milestone.
Robertson said: "It was a nice touch from the league.
“We were at a general meeting at Hampden, so it was a nice wee surprise for the club.
“I never knew it was coming and just before the meeting they made the presentation to us.
"Our sponsors FN Teamwear made presentations to four clubs who had reached milestones. We were 100 years, Rhu were 125 years and St Joseph’s and Milton were 50 years.”
YM’s 100th anniversary celebrations continue throughout the year with a race night on March 5, golf days in March and April, followed by a speakers’ night in June. The club are also in the process of re-arranging their annual ‘Old Crocks’ tournament, which was postponed in January due to Covid.
Following last week’s prizegiving, YM and Eastwood Park Mount braved the atrocious weather conditions on Saturday in a GGPL match that YM won 7-0.
Ross McDonagh netted a hat trick with Matt Haggerty scoring two. Max Foster and Cammy McCulloch were also on target to ensured their league title hopes remain intact.
Robertson, who is also manager of the Caledonian League side, added: “The Caley team were off this week, but The GGPL team had a good win, so it was a good week for the club.
“That keeps them on track to hopefully win their league.”
This Saturday YM’s GGPL side are due to play free scoring local side EKRR in the quarter-final final of the Presidents League Cup at Kirktonholme, kick-off 2pm.
YM’s Caledonian side travel to Stirling University in round one of the Douglas Smith League Cup.
