East Kilbride YM earn Amateur Cup replay

East Kilbride YM earned a Scottish Amateur Cup quarter-final replay after a six-goal thriller with Tollcross Thistle.

YM were twice pegged back last Saturday before having to find an equaliser themselves to force a re-match in Edinburgh this weekend.

First half goals from Craig Tocher and David Kneale had YM in a winning position, but they had to rely on Ross McDonagh to earn a draw on the hour mark after Thistle had taken a 3-2 lead.

The hosts made the breakthrough in 20 minutes when Craig Fry sent a through ball to Tocher, who spun his marker and fired past the keeper.

The tenacity of Tollcross midfielder Crichton, who chased a lost cause and stopped the ball going out for a YM goal kick, paid dividends as his cut back to the edge of the area was hammered into the net by Millar for the equaliser.

YM restored their one goal advantage soon after, when Jordan Fletcher was brought down and Kneale sent a superb free kick into the net.

Just on half time the Edinburgh side restored parity when centre half Smith stole in at the back post unmarked to head home.

The second half had just started when Tollcross took the lead following good left wing play by Yuill, and his low cross ended up in the net.

This setback provoked a response from YM and they were rewarded on the hour when Craig Fry sent a ball over the top to McDonagh, who never broke stride and let the ball bounce off his chest once before lobbing the keeper

Neither side could muster a winner, although YM will feel disappointed as they twice hit the woodwork and had a big shout for a penalty ignored.

Meanwhile, YM’s GGPL side enjoyed a r 4-1 victory at Helensburgh with two goals from Sam Convy, George Paton and Scott Forrest. This week they entertain Eastwood Park Mount in the league at Kirktonholme, kick off 2pm.
