East Kilbride YM dedicate win to club stalwart as sides across Caledonian League pay respects

East Kilbride YM dedicated their win over St Mungo’s to late club stalwart Les Goodfellow as clubs across the Caledonian League held a minute’s silence in his memory on Saturday.

A former player, committee member and past president of YM, Mr Goodfellow passed away suddenly last week at the age of 78 and all four of YM’s teams joined club across the Caledonian League – of which Les was also a past president – to pay their respects.

Mr Goodfellow’s family were in attendance at Kirktonholme for the minute’s silence and YM’s Caley League side went on to win 4-1, with Ross McDonagh hitting a hat-trick and Josh Cairns also on target.

YM gaffer Graeme Robertson said: “It was nice to get the win for him and recognise Les for all his years at the club.

“That could never make up for everything he has done for the club, but it was good to have a way of showing our appreciation for him.

“The nicest part of that was being able to have his family there for it.

“His nephew had travelled over from Dublin for the game and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law were also on the pitch with him for the minute’s silence.

“The family has been touched by the huge response on social media from far and wide. Les was respected by everyone in the football community, not just in East Kilbride, and the Caledonian League also had minute’s silence before their games.”

Mr Goodfellow would have been proud of the club’s start to the season with Saturday’s win maintaining their 100 per cent win rate in the league, with six victories from six putting them top of the Premier Division.

YM’s 35 side enjoyed a victory, defeating Bonnyrigg Rose 2-1 in the quarter final of the Scottish Cup, while the Greater Glasgow Premier League side went down 2-1to Rannoch.

This Saturday EKYM Caledonian team have a home game at Kirktonholme against Doune Castle, with a 2pm kick off.
