East Kilbride YM boss seeks league safety at club's new home

East Kilbride YM boss Graeme Robertson insists maintaining their Premier Division status will be the focus this season.

The Caledonian League side clinched the Division One title last season with a 100 per cent record and are looking forward to life in the top flight at their new home.

Kirktonholme Playing Fields and Pavilion are now under club ownership following a community asset transfer from South Lanarkshire Council and it means the club will no longer be forced to play games outside the town.

But, with so much going on off the park, the aim for this season is ensuring safety.

Robertson, from Calderwood, said: “This season we would just be happy to try and cement our place in the Premier League and see where it takes us.

“We had a good enough squad for this season and we didn’t really go out looking for players, but people have come to us off the back of the success we had last season and the news about Kirktonholme.

“We’ve had a couple of players from East Kilbride Thistle – Craig Tocher and Jordan White – who approached us to play.

“And a player from Anniesland, David Kneale – who has played for the Scottish Amateur international team and was wanted by a few junior teams – chose to play for us as well.

“We’ve been really fortunate that we had a really good squad and good trainers last season.

“We won every single game in the league and we won the cup as well.

“I think success breeds success and hopefully that’s the case again this season.”

Last season Hamilton Palace played host to the YM and they will still play matches there over the next few weeks, with Kirktonholme not opening its doors until September 8.

The Caley team lost 3-2 to St Mungo's in their league opener on Wednesday night, but the club are hoping for an increase in support when they eventually get back on home soil.

Robertson, whose side have a ‘home’ clash with Milngavie Wanderers on Saturday, added: “We’ve got so many players that have played for the club down the years, but because we’ve been playing in Hamilton it’s not been easy for everyone to get along.

“We do get good levels of support as it is, but the response we’ve had since we announced we were coming back to Kirktonholme has been phenomenal.

“I think we will be getting really decent crowds here at Kirktonholme now.

“A lot of the old players are excited about being able to come down and watch and game.

“Between the Caledonian League team and the Greater Glasgow team we should have a game on here at 2pm every Saturday, so they’ll always be something for the YM.”
