East Kilbride YM beat the weather for cup semi-final - but not pitch glitch

The Douglas Smith League Cup semi final between EKYM and St.Mungo’s managed to beat Storm Dennis – only to fall foul of a bizarre glitch at Toryglen’s indoor pitch.

The clash was scheduled to be played at the Dalziel Sports Complex with a 1pm kick off.

On the Thursday preceding the fixture, the executive committee of the Caledonian League took the decision, as Storm Dennis approached, to switch the tie to the indoor facility at the Toryglen Football Centre. This was to make sure the tie went ahead as a date had already been confirmed for the final.

At 1pm on Saturday, with both teams walking out, match officials in position and a healthy crowd all seated, the mechanism that lifts the heavy duty curtains that split the pitch into four, for small sided games, failed to lift and the much anticipated match could not go ahead.

YM boss Graeme Robertson said: “It’s typical, but one of these things you can’t do anything about.

“The curtains raise something like 100ft and the issue just wasn’t fixable on the day.”

Will it be curtains for YM’s chances of getting to a cup final?

The sides will try again this Saturday at Dalziel, with the kick-off scheduled for 1pm.

The club’s other sides had their matches postponed as well. This Saturday YM’s Greater Glasgow Premier League side host Glasgow University in the league.
