East Kilbride weekend train services cancelled due to electrification works

Trains between East Kilbride and Glasgow Central face further cancellations due to electrifications works.

The East Kilbride and Barrhead corridors are being upgraded as part of wider plans to decarbonise all rail passenger services in Scotland by 2035.

This saw trains between East Kilbride and the city cancelled this weekend, with no services next weekend either due to preparatory works on the line.

Network Rail Tweeted on Saturday: "No @ScotRail trains between @NetworkRailGLC and Barrhead, East Kilbride & Kilmarnock this weekend and next due to electrification prep work."

Work to demolish a railway bridge on Nithsdale Road, in Glasgow's southside, will begin this weekend with disruption to services over two consecutive weekends including August 13-15.

Significant round the clock activity will include the use of a crane and lorries to remove bridge materials from the site.

The bridge will be raised and re-decked to create the room required to install overhead powerlines beneath the structure.

Plans to dual the line - as well as electrify - between East Kilbride and Busby were ditched after a sudden U-turn last October via an announcement from Transport Scotland.

Calls have been made for the EK dual track to be put back on the table from local campaigners and politicians.

Rachael Melody, senior sponsor for the project, said “This work is an essential part of the electrification programme that will create a more reliable and greener railway for our passengers and lineside neighbours.

“The weekend closures of this rail line will allow us to complete the works safely and efficiently, and while disruption is expected, we fully appreciate the patience and support of the community during this time.”
