East Kilbride weather warning says area could be blasted by gale force winds

Locals are being urged to batten down the hatches this afternoon as winds of up to 30mph get set to batter East Kilbride.

And weather experts are warning that wind gusts on Monday could reach as much as 56mph, causing havoc with travel conditions.

Between 2pm and 5pm, East Kilbride will be hit with 30mph winds and face a 95 per cent chance of heavy rain.

Gusts between those times are set to range from 55mph to 56mph, before calming down to 41mph, with powerful gusts expected to last into the early hours of Tuesday.

Temperatures will spike to six degrees around 4pm, but the region will struggle to get above five degrees throughout the day, with the ‘feels like’ temperatures in the minus throughout.

The worst of the weather is expected to be felt between 3pm and 5pm.

The Met Office advice comes as Scotland as a whole braces itself for 12-hours of weather disruption from Storm Brendan.

Gales of up to 80mph are set to sweep across parts of the UK from midday, with coastal routes and communities expected to be worst affected by Brendan as large waves batter seafronts.

Yellow weather warnings are in place for much of the western half of the UK and the north-east of Scotland.

The severe conditions, including heavy rain, could cause travel disruption, and those in affected areas are advised to take extra care when driving on exposed routes such as bridges or high open roads.

On Monday morning, Lanarkshire police divisions issued a warning to drivers saying roads across the area were being “affected by ice”.

Reports on a number of local Facebook forums on Monday highlighted difficult travel conditions.
