East Kilbride v Cove Rangers: Woods out to make amends in playoffs

Mention the playoffs to East Kilbride winger Paul Woods and a look of anguish crosses his face.

Having missed a penalty in the shootout defeat to Cowdenbeath in the 2017 League Two playoff final, the St Leonards man is still haunted by that moment.

Kilby’s promotion dreams ended in the cruellest manner that rain-soaked day in Fife.

But that pain is driving Woods to deliver in his second venture into these do-or-die matches and he is dreaming of being the Kilby hero on this occasion.

“I try not to think about the Cowdenbeath game because if I think about it too much I wouldn’t be able to play – that’s how much it affected me,” Woods revealed ahead of Saturday’s semi-final first leg with Cove Rangers.

“I think it felt so bad because the league was wrapped up last time and I came in at the end of the season. All the players had done the hard work and I’d let them down.

“But this season I’ve been here from the start and really feel part of the success we’ve had.

“What happened last time makes me determined to put things right and hopefully I can make amends over these games.

“The ideal scenario is I score the goal that takes us up.

“Football is funny like that, so you never know.

“You see it all the time. The game has a way of making itself work out for you.

“But we won’t be getting ahead of ourselves because we have some very tough games.”

Woods knows Cove have been firing on all cylinders in the Highland League and go into Saturday’s clash on a 17-game unbeaten run.

So he has stressed the importance of a strong first leg showing to take up north for next week’s return leg.

He added: “There’s good money up there and they’ve attracted some good players with it, so we know they will be a strong side.

“They have guys who have played for Peterhead and other SPFL teams, so we know they are going to have quality and have players who will cause us problems.

“We want to get out of the traps quickly and hopefully take a good result with us to Cove.”

Meanwhile, Kilby boss Stuart Malcolm is expecting a tight contest as the meanest defences in the Lowland and Highland leagues clash.

He said: “It will be about who can find that attacking spark to make the difference because both teams haven’t conceded many goals this season.

“There’s real talent in the squad so we know we will have to be at the top of our game.

“It calls for an intriguing tie. To win any league is tough. Nobody wins the league without being a good side, so I don’t think either team is going into this expecting an easy game.

“We want to get as positive a result as we can and make sure the tie is still alive going into the second leg.”
