East Kilbride Thistle co-boss Russell Craig says the Jags have been left in the dark over when their postponed fixtures will be played.
Craig’s men won 3-1 against Yoker Athletic in West of Scotland Football League Conference C action on Saturday. It was their first competitive game since losing to Yoker in the Scottish Junior Cup on October 23.
They’ve had two games called off since. A match with Wishaw couldn’t be played due to a waterlogged pitch while the death of St Roch’s boss Paul Kelly forced that game to be called off.
Findlay Tough and Cole McIntyre struck for EK Thistle at the weekend as an own goal sealed their win against Yoker. It moves them to 12th, but Russell’s men have five games in hand over some Conference C rivals.
Addressing their current situation, Craig explained: “It was good to be able to get back playing. It was sad news from St Roch’s about their manager, Paul Kelly. I think the last time we played was against Yoker in the cup.
“That was a few weeks ago as the Wishaw game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. It’s just good to be back playing again. But to be fair to the boys, they have applied themselves really well.
“They put the effort in during training. The result on Saturday was justified. They are working hard for each other and fitness was never an issue that could have come into it.
“They are all pretty fit lads. I think 80 per cent of the boys are around 21 years of age. So fitness shouldn’t be a massive concern for us. Young guys these days look after themselves really well.
“That’s good. It’s up to the league when these games get played now.
“Other teams we are due to play are still in the cups and we seem to be the team getting games called off because of it. But we don’t have an idea when they will be played.”
Now, due to more cup involvements, EK only have three more league fixtures scheduled for the rest of 2021.
A massive challenge awaits this weekend though in the South Challenge Cup third round.
Russell’s side face Bo’ness United of the Lowland League, which represents a big test for the Jags.
While not setting many expectations, the Thistle manager is urging his team to enjoy the occasion and put everything they have into the tie.
Russell added: “This is a massive test for us, but it’s one we are looking forward to. We will take it as it comes.
“Then we will see where that takes us. We have our own expectations but it is just a case of going and enjoying it
“The boys will apply themselves in the right manner. We aren’t going there with any massive expectations.”
