East Kilbride Thistle end campaign with worst home defeat of the season

East Kilbride Thistle...3 Glasgow Perthshire...5

A depleted East Kilbride Thistle suffered their worst home defeat of the season on Saturday as the curtain fell on their 2018/19 campaign.

It was the final game at the helm for caretaker duo Tam Barclay and Dougie Ryan, with new boss Gary Hamilton unveiled on Monday, and visitors Glasgow Perthshire ran out comfortable 5-3 winners at the Showpark.

The defeat sees Thistle finish eighth in West Region One when sixth place looked achievable two weeks ago.

And Ryan said: “It’s a very disappointing way to finish the season.

“But we had six call offs before the game and had to pull in Jack McQuade and Garry O’Hanlon as trialists because we only had 10 fit players.

“It was always going to be difficult, but we’ve gone to pot in the last couple of games because the boys’ heads have been elsewhere.

“I can’t see myself at Thistle next season to be honest. I feel it’s time for a change.”

The Jags broke the deadlock after 12 minutes when Craig Tocher fired the hosts in front.

But this merely proved to bring the visitors to life as they hit back in 25 minutes through Harrison and Murphy put them 2-1 by half-time.

Three minutes into the second half Baboucar extended Glasgow’s lead and before the hour mark Harrison grabbed his second of the day for 4-1.

A fifth goal for the away side arrived when Murphy completed his brace in 73 minutes.

Desperate to salvage some pride, Thistle grabbed a consolation through Scott Gillespie 10 minutes from time and O’Hanlon made the scoreline a little less humiliating with a 90th minute effort.

Gary Hamilton will take the reins for next season and it remains to be seen how many of this season’s squad remain at the Showpark, with former boss Alan Paterson expected to cherry pick from this crop and take them to Cambuslang Rangers.
