East Kilbride Thistle boss gives Drumchapel clash zero chance after sub-zero temperatures

East Kilbride Thistle boss Iain Diack reckons there is almost zero chance of their first game of 2021 going ahead this weekend.

The Jags are due to host Drumchapel on Saturday at the Showpark on their return from a West of Scotland Conference C winter break, but freezing conditions will likely put paid to that idea.

To make matters worse, the Jags are due to be idle the following week in the nine-team division and could be starting at almost a month since their last fixture - which was a bruising 6-1 defeat Kilsyth Rangers on December 19.

Thistle had hoped to potentially switch the game to the all-weather surface at K-Park, but East Kilbride FC are due to host Vale of Leithen on Saturday in the Lowland League.

The WOSL are able to continue training and playing, despite the country entering the most severe lockdown measures once again on Monday, but Diack said: “I would say Saturday’s game is 99.9 per cent off as it stands.

“We are still free to do what we have been doing within the guidelines, so it’s more the weather that’s going to affect us.
It’s been raining and that’s turned to ice so I think we’ll have a hard job of clearing that.

“The only other solution would have been - like we’ve done at times before - is move it to K-Park, but EKFC are at home so that scuppers that idea.

“I don’t think the K-Park would be playable for a Friday game either, having spoken to the guys up there.

"Our training was cancelled on Tuesday and the forecast is actually going to get worse I think.

“We haven’t got a league game the following week so that is a bit of a nightmare, but we’ll get something organised. We won’t go two weeks without doing anything if we can help it.”

The players had the Christmas and New Year break off and haven’t kicked a ball since December 19.

So if, as expected, the big freeze continues to wreak havoc, Diack reckons it’s probably a blessing in disguise if the game doesn’t go ahead.

He added: “It wouldn’t be ideal anyway because if our training is cancelled running up to the game, we would maybe be going into a game without training for two weeks.

"We’d rather get back into the swing of things and move forward from there.”
