East Kilbride Thistle boss confident West of Scotland League will play to a finish

East Kilbride Thistle manager Iain Diack remains confident that their West of Scotland division will be completed.

The WOSL announced on Sunday that they’ll reschedule the fixtures in order to fulfil a minimum of 50 percent of the fixtures.

The Jags are in a unique position as their Conference C contains only nine teams and boss Diack believes the season can be finished when spring arrives.

He said: “From April when the light nights come in, you could easily play 10 games in a month and it’s the same in May.

“There’s also the end of March to squeeze in games.

“We’re in the smallest conference so I don’t see it being a problem to finish all our games. It’s easily achievable to finish ours but the problem will be the bigger leagues and that’ll probably impact us.

“They obviously think it’ll be difficult to fulfil all the fixtures but at least they’re trying to get us back playing or training again.

“It’s not ideal playing three times a week but some players will prefer that to training.

Earlier this month, the former Stenhousemuir striker expressed his frustration at Celtic’s decision to travel to Dubai and the consequences that had on smaller teams.

EK Thistle haven’t suffered from a positive Covid case and Diack believes all clubs in the WOSL have followed the procedures impeccably.

He said: “If you look at the clubs at our level, not many have had any positive cases.

“Everyone has been quite stringent with the protocols – and we certainly have.

“It was a bit of a kick in the teeth when football got suspended but I’m not one of these people to look too far ahead.

“We’ll just need to deal with the decisions when they are announced.”

East Kilbride Thistle have provided their players with detailed programmes to maintain fitness with no return to action in sight.

However, given the wintery conditions, dark nights and work commitments, Diack concedes it’s tough for his squad to maintain sharpness.

He said: “People have to understand that boys have jobs out with football at this level and families.

“We are constantly back to stage one and fitness will be a problem.

“We give them fitness programmes but it’s been impossible in the last two weeks because the weather has been treacherous.

“The boys can’t get out and do the sessions. Some of them come back from work and it’s dark, they can’t really do anything other than running on the road.

“That’s great for keeping weight off but it’s not football related - it’s an explosive sport.”

Thistle’s last outing came in a heavy 6-1 defeat away to Kilsyth Rangers on December 19.

They currently sit seventh in Conference C, with four points from five outings this season, and are a point clear of nearest rivals Newmains United and bottom side St Anthony’s.
