East Kilbride Thistle boss Alan Paterson targeting Scottish Cup shock against Broughty Athletic

EK Thistle interim boss Alan Paterson hopes to cause an upset against Broughty Athletic in the Scottish Junior Cup.

With Showpark still not ready, the Jags welcome the Dundee side to K-Park on Saturday in the famous competition.

EK Thistle famously won the trophy in 1983 against Bo’ness at Ibrox and although Paterson doesn’t expect to replicate that achievement, he believes anything is possible.

“It’s going to be a really special occasion,” Paterson admitted. “It’s a chance for us to win a famous cup although I’m realistic, we won’t be the favourites.

“It’s a bit of an unknown tie against Broughty. We don’t know too much about them because it’s a bit far away to go and watch them.

“We’ve been able to go on their website and watch a few of their games. They look like a good side and judging by their league position they’ll be dangerous - they are sitting seventh in the top league.

“It’s a one-off game and you’ve just got to go for it. We won’t be expected to win but they’ll face a long journey to play us.”

Paterson is yet to be appointed permanent boss at EK Thistle due to an ongoing issue with former boss Iain Diack but he’s already planning for the future.

“We’ve been here for three weeks now but hopefully we will be announced as official managers soon.

“We’ve spoken to the club and we’ve discussed how we plan to move forward. We’ve got our squad in place but a couple of players are still injured.

“The nucleus of the squad trained last night and we’ve got a solid base. We still want to add a few bodies because we’ve got a very young squad.

“The oldest player in our last game was only 23-years-old and we know that it’s a project but the kids have absolutely no fear.”
