East Kilbride tax workers sent home after heating system packs in

It seems the tax man hasn't paid his bills - or put 50p in the meter at least - after workers at Centre 1 in East Kilbride were sent home on Monday.

Staff claim following the heating failure they have been told it is unlikely Queensway House will reopen tomorrow.

But alternative working arrangements have been put in place say HMRC.

"We have been told we can work from home, report to Plaza Tower or take a day's annual leave," said a source.

"This isn't the first time there has been problems and it really needs sorted."

The 'Stay in EK' Campaign - spearheaded by the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) - and backed by the East Kilbride News is battling to save nearly 3000 jobs which are due to be moved to a regional centre in Glasgow by 2026 under restructuring plans.

But this isn't the first time workers have had to wrap-up because  the heating system has ground to a halt.

Back in January 2018 - when East Kilbride was hit by a big freeze and temperatures plummeted to as low as minus 7C overnight - staff were sent home.

But there were complaints from some staff saying they had to work in "baltic conditions" before the office eventually closed.

An HMRC spokesperson said: “We can confirm there is a heating issue at Queensway House and some of our people have been relocated to nearby offices to provide business as usual.

“Engineers are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”
