East Kilbride Sports Awards cancelled due to coronavirus outbreak

The East Kilbride Sports Personality of the Year Awards has become the latest casualty of the coronavirus shutdown.

The town's Sorts Council were due to honour sports stars young and old at their annual awards bash in the Village Theatre on Saturday, April 25.

However, for the first time in over 50 years of the awards, the ceremony will not go ahead.

And EK Sports Council treasurer, Bob Anderson, told Lanarkshire Live Sport there are currently “no plans at present to reschedule the date.”

From the start of January, local clubs and teams were invited to send in their nominations to recognise the outstanding performances from local athletes during 2019 and entries for nominations were set to close on Friday.

A host of team prizes were set to be awarded, as well as a special services to sport gong.

Scotland goalkeeper Lee Alexander is the reigning East Kilbride Sports Personality of the Year following her performances for club and country in women’s football.
