East Kilbride sink Caledonian Braves as boss praises key attribute amid hectic schedule

East Kilbride boss Chris Aitken praised his players for continuing to produce the goods amid a packed schedule.

His Kilby side claimed a 3-1 win over Caledonian Braves in the South West section of the Lowland League Cup last night to move joint-top of the table and take a step closer to reaching the quarter-finals of the competition.

It was their eighth win on the spin in all competitions and Aitken - who thrashed Braves 7-0 in a league clash in their last meeting in December - was delighted to come away with three points in the section, where the top two progress.

Kilby recovered from Neil McLaughlin's early penalty miss to break the deadlock through BJ Coll after 37 minutes. Braves levelled up before half-time, but Steven Old and Joao Victoria earned the win in the second half.

Aitken said: "It was a good result because we knew Braves would really be up for it after the last result we had against them in the league.

"They tried to get in our faces and make it a bit physical, but it was another great win for us.

"I would have taken 3-1 at the start of the game. Once we went 2-1 up we got a grip of the game and looked a real threat going forward.

"On another day Neil, with his quality, could have scored three or four goals.

"I know he missed a penalty but his all-round game has been absolutely top-drawer.

"It was another good performance.

"I can't speak highly enough of them. The games are coming thick and fast, but they keep turning up and producing results."

Kilby now host Gretna 2008 at K-Park on Saturday.

A win there would ensure qualification for the knockout stages of another cup competition, having already reached the quarter-finals of the South Challenge Cup next month.

Aitken added: "They've got the chance to have a really strong end to the season and if we go and win on Saturday, the boys are in another quarter-final.

"That's the goal against Gretna and I shouldn't need to do much talking on Saturday.

"It's over to them to go and get themselves into another big game."
