Majority of shops to remain closed at East Kilbride shopping centre

Indoor shopping centres have to remain closed despite Scotland moving into Phase 2 of its lockdown exit.

That was the bitter blow dealt to bosses and retailers at EK, East Kilbride last week.

Announcing that some shops could open their doors again from June 29, the First Minister said they must have outdoor entrances and exits.

Speaking at First Minister’s questions, Nicola Sturgeon said: “I am afraid for the time being, indoor shopping centres will remain closed, except for access to essential shops such as supermarkets and pharmacists.

“However, indoor shopping centres should prepare to re-open in Phase 3 as indicated in the route map.”

Reacting to the news, a spokesman for EK, East Kilbride said it was ‘of course disappointing,’ but understood that guidance measures had to be adhered to.

He told the News : “With the government’s guidance in mind, only retailers who fall into the essential category plus one or two others, will operate in EK, East Kilbride during this phase.

“Although the majority of non-essential retail will remain closed for the time being, the centre team has been working with retailers to prepare for a further relaxation of guidelines and the return of a full retail offer when Phase 3 is introduced at some point over the coming weeks.”

In her speech on Thursday, the First Minister outlined what guidance stores need to follow when they do open and said they should use the time before June 29 ensure they comply with what’s expected of them.

She said: “For example, to manage queues, pedestrians and cyclists, ensure that unnecessary street furniture is removed, and that markings and guidances are in place to support strict physical distancing.

“Appropriate physical distancing and hygiene measures must be in place.”

Measures at EK, East Kilbride to be introduced for Phase 3 will include clear and simple safe distancing guidelines and signage.

There will also be a footfall management system and a reduction in touch points throughout the centre.

The centre spokesman said a full list of measures would be communicated to shoppers as soon as possible.

He added: “We understand this has, and continues to be, a challenging time for everyone and we would like thank our shoppers, retailers and centre staff for their patience and support.”

Also included in Ms Sturgeon’s message last week was the ability of some to return to work.

Factories, workshops, and research centres can reopen with flexible working where possible. Outdoor businesses will also reopen, but offices should not reopen for now.

Ms Sturgeon said COVID-19 is still clearly a dangerous virus, but the rate of infection has fallen.
