Torrance House Golf Club have invested in their future after relaunching their junior academy.
Cash from the Village Inn and from committee member Steve McKinnon’s firm, McKinnon Auto and Tyres, allowed the club to improve their set-up, and there are now 30 members all signed up, with a waiting list already forming.
Youngsters made the most of the glorious weather last week to get out and clock up some practice minutes, assisted by club coach Colin Hotchkiss.
Former club captain McKinnon said: “We had a parents’ evening to enrol everybody and we’ve got 30 seven to 12-year-olds ready to rock on.
“It’s our first junior academy at Torrance House for a long time, because of Covid last year but before that the youngsters had to go to Brancumhall.
“The old practice area was dilapidated, the roof fell off it and it was unsafe and really just wasn’t set up for it.
“In my captaincy two years ago I decided to try my best to put a lot of pressure on the council, but to be fair we’ve had to do it ourselves in all honesty.
“The greenkeeper has been unbelievable, he’s put a lot of attention onto it and got it looking really good for people coming to it.”
Steven added: “We had the Village Inn in East Kilbride help. Grace Jardine used to be the ladies’ captain at Torrance House back in 2000, and they donated £500, which went a long way.
“My own company, McKinnon Auto and Tyres, we decided to invest in that, and my nephew Alex McKenzie is the junior captain this year, so I thought I’d pump a wee bit of funding into it, too.”
