East Kilbride's 'mystery gardener' is honoured at Holyrood

A kindhearted gardener who helped maintain his local area has received a Parliamentary Motion.

We told you in September how Colin Nicholson – known locally as the ‘mystery gardener’ – had worked tirelessly to ensure that his West Mains area was kept tidy.

That saw him clear the area of rubbish and mess, as well as trim back overgrown grass edges and pull up weeds.

Now Colin has been recognised in Holyrood thanks to Linda Fabiani MSP.

Her motion read: “I moved that this Parliament recognises East Kilbride’s ‘mystery gardener,’ Colin Nicholson.

“As reported in East Kilbride’s weekly newspaper, the East Kilbride News, Colin has been keeping his local area of West Mains tidy during the time that normal council services have been curtailed.

“I move that this Parliament notes Colin has been weeding pavements, maintaining green areas and picking up litter over the last six months.

“And move that this Parliament welcomes, along with Colin’s neighbours and residents of West Mains, his community spirit, and encourages everyone to help keep East Kilbride and Scotland beautiful.”

Sandra McIver had been left so impressed and touched by Colin’s efforts that she contacted the East Kilbride News.

She told us: “I was on my way home from the town centre when I saw a man weeding the pavement in the underpass at Debenhams. I commented that he was doing a grand job and we got chatting. I assumed he was a council groundsman, but it turned out that he is just a local man who takes pride in keeping the area tidy.

“He even tidies up after the council come round and cut the grass. I was taken aback by his dedication and passion in keeping our town looking good.

“I think he deserves a bit of recognition for his community spirit.”

Linda told the News that she “loved” reading about Colin’s efforts and was “really happy to share” his great work with colleagues.
