East Kilbride Rugby Club coach says fixtures 'headache' could mean trophy success

East Kilbride Rugby Club boss Allan Steel hopes the club's fixture headache gets worse - because it will mean his club have silverware to play for.

The Torrance House side have played just twice since the turn of the year and are well behind schedule in the league.

Due to a raft of postponements, they currently have nine league games remaining and a cup semi-final against Hawick Harlequins on March 28.

Despite the frustrations, Steel hopes the season is extended a little while longer.

He said: "There's 10 games left to try and fit in, but hopefully it will be 11.

"Having the cup semi-final later in the month adds to the problems as well, but we want to get through and have another game on top of everything.

"It's been a bit of a joke trying to get games played. The weather has been horrendous and we've not had a dry day for months."

The boys are training hard, but it's frustrating because they just want to play.

EK are due to host Annan on Saturday in the league, where they still have an outside chance of promotion. But the game could be switched to Duncanrig Secondary School's pitch in a bid to get the game on.

The club's fixture card - originally due to finish at the end of this month - stretches to Thursday, May 7 at the moment.

Steel added: "The plan is to get everything played by the start of May, but we'll just need to wait and see."

The SRU don't want us going into June or anything, so we need to get the games played.

"We are trying to get midweek games in, but that is proving a problem because a lot of the 4g pitches are booked for football or it's all block bookings.

"We've been booking school pitches as well as having our own pitch ready.

"This weekend we might have to switch the Annan game to Duncanrig and we hope between the two pitches we will get the game played.

"The boys are working so hard on their fitness, but it's not the same as match fitness."We just need to stay focussed to get the results we need in the league and see where it takes us."
