East Kilbride pupils to miss out on extra holidays this Christmas

School pupils in South Lanarkshire won’t be getting an extended break this Christmas.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed the school break will remain the same as planned following advice the COVID Advisory Group.

Schools will finish up for the Christmas break on Tuesday, December 22, before pupils return to lessons in the New Year on Wednesday, January 6.

Addressing MSPs at Holyrood, Ms Sturgeon (pictured) said: “There has been discussion over the past week about whether any changes were required to the upcoming school holiday period. I can confirm that there will be no changes to school holidays.

“The Deputy First Minister has this morning written to the education committee providing them with a copy of the advice we have received from the COVID Advisory Group sub committee on this matter.”

Ms Sturgeon also updated MSP on plans to begin the coronavirus vaccination programme from next week.

She said: “The Health Secretary will make a statement later today updating MSPs on our plans to vaccinate people against COVID and we are preparing for the first vaccinations in Scotland to take place next Tuesday.

“That will be a significant landmark in our collective struggle against the virus and although we still have difficult months ahead the awareness vaccination is starting will I’m sure make many of us feel more hopeful as we enter the Christmas period.

“The prospect of vaccination and with it a return to something more like normality should also give us a further incentive in the weeks ahead to keep ourselves and loved ones safe. As ever, all of us can play our part in doing that by sticking to the current rules and guidelines.”
