East Kilbride pupils go above and beyond in befriending project

A group of befrienders were given a special thank you for going above and beyond to help older people in the local community feel less isolated.

Senior pupils involved in Calderglen High’s befriending project found new ways of continuing their valuable work despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

The award-winning scheme sees senior pupils paired with an older person providing companionship or before COVID, giving them a helping hand around the house.

And as a thank you teachers gave them some goodie bags instead of the usual festive lunch.

They were delivered by retired technical teacher Mr McShane.

Avril Anderson, who founded the scheme, told the East Kilbride News: “This year due to COVID the pupils phoned their seniors once a week for 30 to 45 mins during their free time.

“It has been a great success for both pupil and seniors, allowing more seniors to participate instead of just those in the area of the school. Seniors who have also benefitted include a lady of 90 in Zandyhills in Glasgow and a gentleman in Hamilton aged 83.

“The pupils have continued to call throughout the Christmas holiday period and throughout lockdown and have been a real credit to their local community.”

One senior who uses the scheme, Myra Goodwin, added: “I was wondering how I could fill in five minutes talking to a young person I had never met or knew on the phone but believe it or not our conversation lasted for 45 minutes. Next week we are going to use FaceTime so we can see each other.

“I’m sure she went off looking forward to next week, and so did I.

“There are many senior pupils in the school who would love to talk to you and help you. My befriender volunteered to get me any shopping I need, or needed during lockdown, not knowing how far or near I was.

“It is very different this year with COVID-19. And I honestly didn’t think it would be as good, but it has worked out very well.

“I would urge folk to get involved and help our senior pupils at school and yourself. It is very worthwhile and enjoyable. Avril will be delighted to hear from you and pair you up with a senior.”
