East Kilbride professionalism praised by boss after comfortable cup win

East Kilbride manager Chris Aitken was 'chuffed' with his players after a mature display and 3-0 victory against Larkhall Thistle in the South Challenge Cup second round.

Aidan McDonald, Lee Miller and Jack Stainrod goals in the second half booked the Lowland League side's progression to the third round.

It was a third 3-0 victory on the spin for East Kilbride after matches against Dalbeattie Star and University of Stirling in league action.

"It was a professional performance from my guys, pretty much so," said Aitken. "It was a good run for my squad as I was able to play a few players who haven't played much recently.

"We got them some minutes. We got into the second half and we made some changes. It gave us a bit of quality, bringing guys like Chris Erskine on, it gave us a bit of a jag.

"So, it was professional from the guys. I am chuffed with the 90 minutes. The first goal was always going to be important. The longer we went without it, they started to grow in confidence a wee bit.

"But once we got the goal, it eased my players and took the pressure off. They started to play a bit more freely. It was good to get a couple of goals."

What especially pleased Aitken was another clean sheet for his side. They return to action in the Scottish Cup against University of Stirling this Saturday.

"The most important thing was getting another clean sheet," added Aitken. "It's been great for the confidence of my defenders. Everything is going good.

"Then it's always nice when you put them in at the other end. Overall it was a good day's work for us. We're back into the cup this week, and a different one, I may add.

"But it was important we got through in this one first."
