East Kilbride mum's nine stone weight loss 'changed her life'

An East Kilbride mum who shed more than nine stones for her daughter has said her weight loss has “changed her life”.

Nurse Michelle Muir is now a Slimming World consultant, running classes in Our Lady of Lourdes Church Hall.

Overweight for most of her life, she tipped the scales at over 23 stones when she began her journey once again with the group – and hasn’t looked back since.

Having her daughter gave her the push she needed as she wanted to be a “happy, healthy mum”.

Michelle told the East Kilbride News: “It became my ‘normal’ even at ten years old.

“My mum would cook healthy meals at home, but I would still go out and buy sweets and crisps and eat them in secret.

“Growing up I had no confidence, I longed to lose weight and wear nice clothes and be the same as everyone else.

“When I was aged about 16, I was so ashamed of being overweight that I thought my mum and sister would be embarrassed to be seen out with me, it was devastating.”

Michelle said she had tried dieting on numerous occasions but nothing was working.

When she became a theatre nurse her job was affected too, with Michelle saying she was exhausted all the time.

And she even found it hard to get scrubs to fit.

Any attempts to go out for a walk with friends left her unable to keep up and completely out of breath.

Despite being anxious about returning to Slimming World, Michelle was welcomed with open arms.

She said: “I learned to cook and now make all my meals from scratch – but I can also still enjoy a packet of crisps.

“The support I got from my friends at Slimming World has being brilliant. I couldn’t have done it on my own.

“So far I have dropped from a size 24/26 to a 14.

“I can’t quite believe what I have achieved. I’ve found new confidence and shopping for clothes is a pleasure now.

“I actually like what I see in the mirror.

“I have changed mine and my daughter’s life forever. I am now the mum I want to be, I have more energy to run after her in the park and climb up the equipment at the soft play.”

Join Michelle at her class in Our Lady Of Lourdes Church Hall, Canberra Drive, East Kilbride, every Wednesday at 3.30pm and 5.30pm
