East Kilbride Men's Shed officially opens doors to new base

An East Kilbride Men's Shed group which provides vital support to members officially opened their new base recently.

The opening day at St Leonards Hall attracted a large number of people keen to see what's on offer.

EK Men's Shed were based at Westcoast Storage Centre in College Milton, but found themselves homeless last year.

Running since 2014, the charity, which aims to provide a social outlet to tackle isolation and loneliness, had used the base for four years.

Members carried out a number of Zoom calls and regular catch-ups with each other during lockdown but a row broke out last year between the landlord of the storage unit - who was chairman of EK Men's Shed at the time - and members.

But Lanarkshire Live revealed earlier this year that he group secured a lease for the vacant St Leonards hall to develop a new 'Shed'.

The group said at the time the location was "ideal" within "the heart of the community" making them "more accessible" to all with local councillors welcoming the use of a space which has been empty for some time.

They have been working hard over the last few months to create an ideal space for everyone to use and were delighted to show it off.

Paul Munday, secretary of the group, said: "The event attracted around 150 people, great sandwiches and cake and we had a local folk group "Metamorphosis" playing throughout.

"EK Men's Shed is one of the town's best kept secrets and is open Monday to Friday 12.00 - 16.00 for anyone who likes a social chat along with a cuppa and biscuit.

"They can even make stuff in our workshop if it suits them."

Paul Creechan, Men’s Shed development officer at South Lanarkshire Council, said the charity provides "vital support" to its 50-plus members.

He told us : “After a long journey and a lot of hard work from the Shed committee it was a huge boost to have new premises confirmed that were suitable for developing a base.

"Men’s Sheds like East Kilbride Shed’ provide many health benefits for members."
