East Kilbride hit by flooding as torrential rain sweeps across county

Torrential rain left parts of East Kilbride in a floody mess yesterday with the whole of Lanarkshire hit with a deluge.

Cars became stuck and roads had to be closed off as thunderstorms swept across the country.

Morrishall Road and Calderwood road were just two of the roads badly affected - with pictures of Calderwood Road 'buckling' as water poured down it.

A fire engine was seen outside the Alison Lea Medical Centre on Calderwood Road - although a spokeswoman for the fire service said no action by them was required when they arrived.

It is understood it was also closed off for a period and South Lanarkshire Council say there was some damage to property within the local authority area due to flooding.

One woman wrote on social media: "Calderwood road outside Alison Lea has completely flooded!! The road has buckled in the middle with the water pouring out like a fountain!"

Another added: "I live in Gamekeepers Wynd and was met by that flood trying to get home yesterday."

One residents criticised the maintenance of drains adding: "Not a surprise, been doing a lot of walking around Calderwood and St Leonards recently and a lot of the drains are full of earth/soil and rubbish."

South Lanarkshire Council Head of Roads and Transportation Colin Park said: “Heavy and localised rainfall was experienced within the South Lanarkshire Council area over the weekend.

“Several roads and some property flooding occurred during this time.

“The council responded as necessary with some temporary traffic management introduced for safety reasons. Colleagues from Scottish Water also attended to investigate and assist given the impacts on their own drainage systems.

“We continue to liaise with Scottish Water to progress further investigations.”

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Lanarkshire, severe flooding on Calder Road between Mossend and Bellshill saw cars stuck.
