East Kilbride handed 3-0 win after Kilmarnock fielded suspended player in League Cup

Kilmarnock have been handed a 3-0 defeat against East Kilbride due to fielding a suspended player.

Daniel Armstrong appeared as a substitute in Saturday's Premier Sports Cup clash despite carrying a one-match ban from last season with Raith Rovers.

The Ayrshire side won the match 2-0 but that result will be scrapped and Kilby have been awarded the three points putting them top of the group.

An SPFL statement read: "At a disciplinary hearing today (Thursday, July, 15) a sub-committee of the board of the SPFL charged Kilmarnock FC for playing Daniel Armstrong in their Premier Sports Cup match against East Kilbride FC on Saturday, July 10.

"Daniel Armstrong was a listed substitute and entered the field of play at 72 minutes when he replaced Chris Burke. Kilmarnock won the match 2-0.

"Kilmarnock FC admitted breaching SPFL Rules and Regulations by playing the player in the match while he was serving a one-match Scottish FA suspension."

The tribunal imposed the following sanctions:

(i) The club was reprimanded and warned as to future conduct;

(ii) Kilmarnock’s Premier Sports Cup match v East Kilbride FC will be recorded as a 3-0 victory for East Kilbride; and

(iii) A fine of £5,000, suspended in full until June 30, 2022 pending any further breaches of SPFL player regulation

A Kilmarnock statement said: "As a club we reiterate our apology to our fans, who have supported us magnificently, as well as East Kilbride and the footballing authorities for this inadvertent breach.

"While processes are already in place to try and prevent something of this nature occurring, clearly mistakes can and have occurred in this case.

"After quickly investigating the circumstances, we have immediately added an additional step to our internal procedures to ensure this cannot happen again."
