East Kilbride golf kids make the cut after 12-week course

Torrance House Golf Club’s Academy held a graduation on Sunday for 14 kids taking part in lessons on putting, chipping, pitching and driving over the last 12 weeks.

Under the watchful eyes of coaches Colin Hotchkiss and Ewan Kelman, the kids, who are aged between eight and 12, before moving up to the junior section, enjoyed the course.

The club also has a waiting list, to the extent that they originally intended the course to be for 12 people, rather than the intake of 14.

Child wellbeing and protection officer Steve McKinnon said: “Over the 12-week programme we’ve taught them chipping, pitching, putting and driving/long shot, so they had a quarter for every one of them.

“We’ve been really excited because this is the first time we’ve had three young girls in it, and they’ve excelled.

“We’ve had very few call-offs, everybody has turned up for about 90 per cent of the time, which is pretty good throughout the summer, and that shows how popular it has been.

“We had a waiting list; we should have taken 12 but placed it at 14 to try and make sure everybody got a chance.

“They’ve all got a medal, a certificate of qualification, and five of them are going to be moving straight into the juniors, which is a really good return out of 14.”
