East Kilbride Gerihatricks side finish runners-up in first season

East Kilbride’s Gerihatricks team just missed out on glory in the inaugural Over 65’s National Walking Football League.

They finished valiant runners-up in the competition after Ayr United pipped them to the title by three points

Ten teams from all over Scotland took part with EK joined by Ayr United, North Lanarkshire (A and B Teams), Active Stirling, Tullibody, Hearts, Glasgow Sport, Tweedvale and Gala Fairydean.

The sides played each other twice over a six-month period at Ravenscraig Sports Facility in Motherwell.

And Ayr are proving to be the Gerihatricks’ bogey team, having previously beaten them in a cup final.

Despite missing out on the silverware, the team were all smiles as they collected their runners-up medals at Ravenscraig recently.  The team comprised Pat Irvine, Jim McGinty, Frank Gordon, Jim Farrell, Crawford Blunden, Ian Fitzpatrick, Ian McKay, John McKenna, Sam Donaghy, Jim Davidson and Jim Johnston.

The club has been in existence for five years and boast a membership of more than 50 players. Membership is open to anyone aged over 50 and walking football is played every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11am at the Alistair McCoist Complex in Whitehills.
