East Kilbride gas explosion: Fire crews remain on scene after two injured and flat residents evacuated

Emergency services remain on the scene following a suspected gas explosion which injured two people at an East Kilbride flat building.

Police, fire and paramedics rushed to the scene at Main Street at around 11.25am today.

A number of people were evacuated from the building, with Police Scotland stating it was a 'precautionary measure'.

The area remains closed off this evening.

The severity of the blast is not currently know at this time, but the Daily Record reports that one witness said: "The blast must have had one hell of a force in the flat. The walls are buckled outwards."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident in Main Street, East Kilbride.

"Around 11.25am on Monday, 3 May, 2021, police received a report of an explosion. Main Street is closed and a number of people have been evacuated as a precaution from the surrounding buildings.

"Two people have been injured and are being attended to by paramedics."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: "We were alerted at 11.23am on Monday, May 3 to reports of a building on fire at Main Street, East Kilbride.

"Operations Control immediately mobilised six appliances and additional specialist rescue equipment to the three-storey tenement block.

"On arrival firefighters found the scene of a suspected gas explosion at a third floor flat.

"Crews remain in attendance as they work to make the building safe and road closures are in place."

South Lanarkshire Council have asked the public to avoid the immediate area.

They tweeted: "We ask that you avoid the Village area of East Kilbride for now to allow emergency services to deal with an ongoing incident."

A spokesperson for Scottish Ambulance Service said: "A spokesperson from the Scottish Ambulance Service, said: "We received a call at 11.40am to attend an incident on Main Street, East Kilbride. Multiple resources were dispatched to the scene and one patient was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary."
