East Kilbride gaffer would "go mental" if we start thinking about Lowland title, says captain Gary Miller

East Kilbride captain Gary Miller hopes to be lifting the Lowland League trophy aloft at the end of the season but insists his focus is only on the next game because "his gaffer would go mental" if they started thinking any further ahead.

Kilby opened up a three point gap at the top of the table after Miller netted the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Cumbernauld Colts, before he made a goal-saving clearance off the line in stoppage time to deny the visitors a certain point.

Miller, 35, won two league titles with Ross County early in his career and also has a Scottish Cup winners' medal from his spell at St Johnstone.

It is that experience that encouraged boss Kevin Rutkiewicz to bring him to K-Park in the summer and hand him the armband.

Kilby are leading the way at the top from Rangers B - who cannot win the title as per the agreement in them joining the fifth tier - and third-place Civil Service Strollers by five points.

And Miller said: "The aim is to win it and I'm sure that's the aim for many teams in the league this season.

"But it's a long way away and the gaffer would go mental at us if we looked any further ahead than the next game.

"There's not going to be any easy games in this league and you've got to grind games out when you have to.

"I'm enjoying it here. The pitch [at K-Park[ is great and the setup we've got here with the gaffer and Bill [Orr, the assistant manager] is fantastic.

"I'm delighted to be part of it but it's all about what we can do on the pitch and we'll keep taking it game by game."

Miller was also keen to play down his part in the result but was happy to see the team dig in to get a result against a tough Colts outfit, who had plenty chances of their own.

He added: "I'm happy to help the team and get a goal.

"I felt like the guy was going to line up to shoot so I just dropped back a bit. "The ball came straight at me but Curtis [Lyle, the EK goalkeeper] gave me a pat on the back and said 'brilliant' so it must have been going in.

"But it doesn't matter who is there to do that, as long we do our jobs and get the win that's all I acre about.

"It's rare for me to score but usually when I do they are decent, so I'll take that.

"It was a good game. We started really well and then Cumbernauld came into a bit and played some nice football.

"We had to dig in and changed our shape a wee bit in the second half to create a bit more.

"We got the penalty, which we missed, but it was great for myself to get a goal.

"We defended well at the end as well so it's a good win for us."
