A young East Kilbride woman has braved the shave in support of our NHS heroes.
Katie McGough, 23, wanted to give something back to the frontline staff risking their lives to keep the country safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic so she decided to shave her head live on Facebook.
And her hair-raising fundraiser proved to be a cut above, with donations flooding in, doubling her initial target for Lanarkshire Health Board Endowment Funds to nearly £1000.
Katie, from East Mains, said: “I decided to shave my head to raise money and support the NHS for the amazing job they are doing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I stand out on the balcony of my flat on a Thursday night at 8pm to listen to everyone clapping, cheering, banging pots and pans, car horns tooting and bagpipes playing, all in support of our NHS. It’s heartwarming and emotional to listen to and gives me goosebumps every time.
“It made me think, I want to do my bit to show my respect for all the keyworkers out there risking their lives, some of who are my family members and friends.”
Katie works for a local laboratory supply firm who deliver essential products to the NHS and takes spin classes at the Dollan Aqua Centre.
She said the support and encouragement from her family, friends and colleagues spurred her on through the challenge.
“The support I’ve had so far in both donations and kind comments has been absolutely amazing and I can’t thank everyone enough”, added Katie.
“I’d like to say a big thanks to all the other keyworkers: delivery drivers, post workers, bin collectors, shop workers, although I could only choose one charity.
“I know times are tough financially at the moment, but if you could spare a few pounds it would be much appreciated.”
