East Kilbride firearms recovery - 62-year-old man arrested

A 62-year-old has been arrested after nine firearms and ammo were seized at an address in East Kilbride.

Intelligence-led cops swooped on an address at Wingate Drive on Tuesday, June 18.

The man appeared in Hamilton Sheriff Court yesterday - Thursday, June 20, and was remanded in custody.

A Police Scotland statement read: "A man has appeared in court following the recovery of firearms in East Kilbride by the Organised Crime Partnership (OCP).

"Acting on intelligence the OCP, assisted by local officers, executed warrants at a properties on Wingate Drive on Tuesday 18 June 2019.

"The OCP is a joint investigative team between Police Scotland and the National Crime Agency (NCA), who operate under the direction of the Lord Advocate and the Crown Office & Procurator Fiscal Service.

"During the course of this investigation, officers seized nine firearms and a quantity of ammunition.

"A 62-year-old man was arrested and appeared in Hamilton Sheriff Court on Thursday 20 June 2019. He was remanded in custody."

Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Naysmith of the OCP added: “Our operation has now recovered over 20 firearms across Scotland since September 2018 and we will continue in our efforts to take dangerous weapons off our streets.

"Working with our partners across the UK and abroad to proactively target those who attempt to jeopardise the safety of our communities will continue to be treated as a top priority.

NCA Scotland operations manager John McGowan commented: “Taking firearms off the streets makes those streets safer, and results like this demonstrate the value of the NCA and Police Scotland working together.

"Unlawful possession and use of firearms represents a significant threat to our communities, but through the OCP we are continuing to actively target those involved to protect the people of Scotland."
