East Kilbride economy given boost as more lockdown exit measures announced

Beer can flow at East Kilbride pubs from July 6 after the First Minister announced further measures to exit lockdown.

Nicola Sturgeon announced on Wednesday afternoon that beer gardens could open in less than two weeks time.

And if that goes well, she said she is happy to see bars and restaurant open up for internal trade on July 12.

The news was welcomed by Marco Sarao of the Auldhouse Arms, which was forced to shut its doors in March just weeks after an extensive refurbishment.

He told the News : “It’s about time.

“It’s good news in a way and we will open the Auldhouse beer garden on July 6 to make the most of it. But we need more clarification on how we are expected to operate.

“We need details on the distance to be kept between people as well as what our staff are to wear to keep safe.”

Hairdressers and barbers can also welcome customers back into the chair on July 15 – however, all of it will come with a new normal.

That means social distancing and additional health and safety measures must be in place to trade safely and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Details set out in the latest Scottish government guidelines says that travel distance restrictions will be relaxed on July 3, as will self-catering accommodation and second homes.

Outdoor hospitality, subject to physical distancing rules and public health advice, will open three days later with people able to meet in extended groups outdoors – with physical distancing – from July 10.

Organised outdoor contact sports can resume for children and young people on July 13.

Crucially for EK, East Kilbride, non-essential shops inside shopping centres can re-open from July 13.

All holiday accommodation will be permitted from July 15, as will indoor hospitality, hairdressers and barbers, and visitor attractions like museums, galleries, cinemas, monuments, libraries.

And there was good news for parents who have been working from home and trying to look after children, with all childcare providers also able to open from July 15.
