East Kilbride dad who crashed car while seven and a half times drink-drive limit faces jail

An East Kilbride dad who crashed his car was seven and a half times over the drink-drive limit.

Pharmacy assistant Ryan Edwards has now been warned he could be jailed after a sheriff heard he has a previous conviction for a similar offence.

Edwards, 41, of Parry Terrace, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted being over the limit when he crashed in Quebec Drive, East Kilbride, on July 15.

The court heard his Vauxhall Insignia collided with a parked vehicle shortly after midnight.

A couple were asleep in their home and were wakened by the noise of their car being hit.

They looked out of the bedroom window and saw Edwards get out of the driver’s door of his car.

Toni Hicks, prosecuting, said: “One of the witnesses went out of the house and saw Edwards was dazed.

“He was trying to stand up, but was swaying, and he appeared incoherent when the witness tried to speak to him.

“Edwards then walked away from the scene and the police were contacted.

“Officers arrived and found him about 100 metres away.

“He had a small cut on his eyebrow and said he got it when he tripped as he walked from his car. He admitted being the driver.”

When breathalysed, Edwards had a reading of 164 - the limit is 22.

Defence agent Lucy McKenna said Edwards has mental health issues and is on medication. He has held down a pharmacy job for 23 years and helps look after his teenage son.

Ms McKenna stated: “He understands this is an extremely serious offence.

“His car was written off and he has not attempted to drive since. He attended a detox programme shortly after this incident and has abstained from alcohol.”

Sheriff Allan McKay said he was obliged to “consider all options” before dealing with Edwards, but warned him: “Be in no doubt that custody is at the forefront of my mind because of the high reading and the fact you have a recent, similar conviction.”

The sheriff continued the case until next month for a criminal justice social work report and an electronic tagging assessment.

He allowed Edwards to remain on bail, but imposed interim disqualification from driving.
