East Kilbride dad jailed after tearing away from cops in high speed chase

A dad-of-two has been jailed after giving police the slip in a high speed chase.

Scott Allan claimed he panicked when officers tried to stop him for a routine check on March 1 last year.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard he went through a red light and clocked speeds of around 70 miles per hour.

Allan, 35, formerly of Burncrooks Avenue in the town, admitted driving dangerously on various roads in East Kilbride, Carmunnock, King's Park and Castlemilk.

Jennifer McCabe, prosecuting, said officers decided to pull over his Vauxhall Insignia in Tewkesbury Road shortly after 11pm.

But when they put on their blue light and siren, he drove off.

The vehicle was pursued on various roads in the Calderwood area before Allan made his way to the Whirlies roundabout and turned on to East Mains Road.

Ms McCabe said another police vehicle joined the chase and officers noted Allan was driving “well in excess of the 40mph speed limit”.

His Insignia went through a red light as Allan headed towards Glasgow.

Ms McCabe added: “He went onto the Carmunnock bypass and then travelled along Carmunnock Road to Aitkenhead Road.

“Officers followed him to Kingsbridge Drive, but then lost the vehicle.

“A full search was carried out with negative results at that time.

“I understand the speeds were up to 70mph.”

Defence agent Tracy Paterson said her client had mental health issues and problems with alcohol and drugs.

She told the court: “There is little excuse for what he did. He went into a blind panic when he realised the police wanted to stop him.”

Allan also admitted damaging property at his mum’s home in Burncrooks Avenue and at his former partner’s home.

He further admitted threatening to kill his ex and breaching a non-harassment order by going to her home in the early hours.

The court was told she heard male voices outside around 2.15am but didn’t think anything of it.

But when she checked her CCTV she saw that Allan had walked towards her door before turning round and gesturing towards the camera.

She felt “alarmed and intimidated” by this.

Sheriff Thomas Millar jailed Allan for a total of 12 months.

Allan, who has a previous conviction for dangerous driving, was also banned from driving for two years and ordered to resit his test.

The sheriff imposed a fresh two-year non-harassment order designed to keep Allan away from his ex and three children.
