East Kilbride councillor hits out at callous fly tippers after pile of waste dumped at roadside

An East Kilbride councillor has hit out at callous fly tippers after reports of dumped garden and building waste.

The waste was spotted in Thornton Road, between Jackton and Thorntonhall.

Now Independent councillor David Watson is seeking help in identifying those responsible.

The councillor has shared photos of the waste in a bid to identify those who dumped it. Amongst the rubbish was an old gate of a house, which he believes may be able to help assist in finding the culprit.

This follows a number of fly tipping reports in recent months in the town, with residents becoming increasingly more angry at the state of their communities.

Councillor Watson said: “It would appear that someone has had work carried out in their garden and the contractor has dumped the rubbish on Thornton Road.

“If we can identify where the work was carried out we can try to identify the contractor who dumped the rubbish.

“It is important that if local residents are engaging contractors to ensure that they have a waste licence which allows them to dump the rubbish legally, otherwise our country lanes end up like this.

“Environmental Services and Land Services have been made aware of this for investigation. However, if anyone wishes to contact me directly, in confidence, they should not hesitate to get in touch with me.”

South Lanarkshire Council have also warned that fly tippers can face serious fines and warnings should they be caught.

They have urged members of the public to continue to report fly tipping when they see it, and assure that reports will be taken seriously and be investigated.

Shirley Clelland, Head of Fleet and Environmental Services said: “We investigate all incidents of fly tipping and where evidence is found action is taken.

“Where there is proof beyond reasonable doubt that the alleged offender is liable for the fly tipping we will issue a Fixed Penalty Notice.

“In the event of more serious offences and repeat offenders if there is clear evidence of who is liable we will report them to the Procurator Fiscal. This would include incidents of large volumes of waste being dumped and organised criminal activity.

“The council takes fly tipping of any type seriously and I would urge members of the public to report such incidents to Environmental Services through the council’s website at www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk, or alternatively on 0303 123 1015.

“Any information that can help to identify individuals involved in fly-tipping will be treated in confidence.”
