East Kilbride coach backs summer rugby plan

East Kilbride coach Allan Steel backs the concept of summer rugby, but says personally it would be a hurdle for him.

Steel is keen for the players to try it, reckons it would improve the Scottish game, and says he would just adapt to a difficult working arrangement.

Scottish Rugby chief executive Mark Dodson has floated the idea for schools and clubs to consider summer rugby both as a means of getting back to action, but also longer-term.

Steel said: “It’s something that has been talked about for years and it’s something that a lot of guys want.

“Personally, it doesn’t really suit me as much; my work is busier in the summer, but it would improve the likelihood of getting games played and the standard of rugby, so it would be something I would be keen for the boys to try out.

“It would be harder trying to find the time but I would make time.

“Certainly it would help everyone because the standard would improve and the pitches would be better.

“If they’re going to do it, now is the time because we’ve had such a period off, and it would be time to maybe try something new and adapt.”

EK haven’t had a game since the pandemic shut down amateur sport a year ago this week.

Socially distant training had resumed later in the year, but this decision was reversed in October as a Covid second wave hit.

Steel added: “I’m keen just to get something back on the go, and the boys are starting to become a bit more vocal on the group chats and stuff, asking if we’re going to get to do this, or that.”
