A climate strike in East Kilbride last week was supported by the South Lanarkshire Green party.
On Friday, local activists gathered at the Civic Centre in the town to show their support for the ’Fridays for Future’ climate protest.
Hundreds of thousands of climate strikers gathered across the globe to put moral pressure on policymakers, to make them listen to the scientists, and then to take forceful action to limit global warming.
The strike on Friday was the first worldwide climate action since the coronavirus pandemic hit and it took place weeks before the Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow.
Organisers of the global event said there were protests in more than 1,800 towns and cities around the world with large events in Europe, Africa and North and South America.
Gillian Mackay, Scottish Greens Central Scotland MSP, joined young people and members of the South Lanarkshire Greens in the town calling for urgent action on the climate emergency.
Kirsten Robb, Scottish Greens candidate for the 2022 council elections, said: “It was great to join local activists and to have our Green MSP Gillian Mackay in East Kilbride on Friday.
“Strong and fast action on climate change is essential and it could also create thousands of jobs locally in East Kilbride by improving homes and paths, creating decent public transport and greening our environment.”
Gillian Mackay MSP added: “It’s the young people of Scotland who are leading the way for climate action. Their lives will be defined by the climate crisis and they have every right to protest until their voices are heard.
“The actions Greens have taken in government over this past month are already paying dividends. Last week the Scottish Government declared another major shift in policy, recognising that demand for aviation must be reduced rather than increased.
“The Scottish Greens will continue to push for change in parliament, but we need those powerful voices on the street, calling for bigger, quicker action from their elected representatives.”
