East Kilbride care home at centre of COVID-19 outbreak given Inspectorate's backing

An under-fire East Kilbride care home where 23 residents have died from coronavirus has been backed by the Care Inspectorate - despite urgent calls for an investigation.

Central Scotland Labour MSP Monica Lennon reported Whitehills Care Home to the regulatory body saying the “public deserved answers” over the shocking number of deaths and she “couldn’t ignore ongoing fears about safety” at the facility run by Thistle Healthcare Ltd.

But inspectors visited on May 27 with public health staff - just two days after Ms Lennon made the complaint.

And Whitehills is included in a fortnightly report which was presented to the Scottish Parliament yesterday.

The report - which outlines a number of inspections at various facilities - praises Whitehills who it described as having a "significant outbreak" of COVID-19 with many staff having "tested positive and been off work".

The report reads: "We found staff to be knowledgeable in use of PPE and all staff had received COVID19 training.

"The home had a good supply of PPE and this was available throughout the home for staff to access.

"The service had good infection prevention and control procedures in place and staff were assigned to work with either with those with COVID-19 or with those who were symptom free.

"The environment was very clean with good practice in place by domestic staff. Inspectors and public health staff were impressed with the cleanliness in rooms."

Inspectors also said they saw "some evidence" of families being updated on their relative’s care.

The only area picked up for improvement was putting in place a protocol for people who do not meet their fluid intake aim for the day.
