East Kilbride bus routes could be shut down by strikes amid public safety row

East Kilbride and Eaglesham commuters could be impacted by potential First Bus strike action amid a public safety row.

'Unite the union' last week told First Glasgow of intentions to ballot drivers for industrial action, including strikes.

The union say changes by the company, which runs the East Kilbride 18, 21 and 6 service as well as the Eaglesham 4A, will “result in significant cuts in running times and recovery times for drivers.”

Unite believes the introduction of the changes in October “will be a direct threat to public safety, motivated by a drive to further increase profits.”

And they claim that no consultation has taken place with staff regarding the changes.

Now the union are due to hold a consultative ballot next month, in which they expect drivers will “support Unite’s continued stance” of supporting members, supporting public services and supporting those most vulnerable in our communities.”

The union’s national convenor, Mick Dowds, said: “Members are furious that at a time when public safety is paramount First Glasgow is blatantly scurrying around with a new set of rosters.

“This will directly impact on drivers’ wellbeing and could have a catastrophic effect on passengers and the public.”
