East Kilbride boss Stuart Malcolm: Our season is just getting started

East Kilbride players enjoyed a title party at the weekend after winning the Lowland League.

But boss Stuart Malcolm warned his players the time for backslapping is over as their bid for promotion begins in earnest later this month.

Kilby wrapped up the title last Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over Spartans and followed that up with an emphatic 4-0 victory over rivals Kelty Hearts at the weekend.

On Saturday night the squad hit the town to celebrate their achievement.

But the job is only a third of the way complete, with an SPFL play-off semi-final and final to negotiate in the coming weeks if they are seal promotion to League Two.

Malcolm said: “We had a wee gathering at Barocco on Saturday night with the players and it was a great night.

"It was a chance for them to let their hair down – and deservedly so.

“It was even better to do it off the back of a 4-0 win over a side who had been pushing us for the title this season.

“But that’s it. We are back on the horse now and the boys will be working really hard until the end of the season.

“We’ve had the pat on the back and the plaudits that have come our way for winning the league.

“But we are only getting started and we must prepare well for what’s around the corner.”

Kilby are set to face Highland League champions-elect Cove Rangers in the two-legged semi-final on April 27 and May 4.

Should they progress, East Kilbride will face the bottom side in League Two – either Berwick Rangers or Albion Rovers – on May 11 and May 18 for their shot at glory.

Before that, Kilby travel to Hill of Beath on Saturday for the South Challenge Cup semi-final, while they close out the league campaign by hosting BSC Glasgow on trophy day (April 13) and travelling to Kelty on the final day (April 20).

Malcolm added: “The next few games are great preparation.

“Our main goal is the play-offs.

"I’m not going to lie and say it isn’t the only thing that matters, because we all know what the club wants to achieve.

“But we still want to reach that final.

"The players won’t be taking their foot off the gas because we want to take momentum into the play-offs.”

Kick-off at Keirs Park on Saturday is 2.30pm.
